چکیده

p0010 According to a long standing idea, reaching movements are supported by the dorsomedial parietofrontal circuit consisting of the superior parietal lobule (SPL) and the dorsal premotor cortex (PMd), whereas grasping movements entail the dorsolateral parietofrontal network involving the inferior parietal lobule (IPL) and the ventral premotor cortex (PMv). Recently, however, this dichotomist organization has been put into question given that it does not mirror the anatomical and functional organization of reaching and grasping movements. It has been shown that the anatomical pathways linking the posterior parietal cortex to PMd and PMv partially overlap. Also SPL, PMd and PMv contain cells encoding reach direction as well as the orientation and shape of a target object, hand orientation and grip formation necessary for efficient grasping. Furthermore, both the dorsolateral and the dorsomedial networks are active during grasping in humans. Thus, the new evidence questions the existence of two separate circuits for reaching and grasping and suggests that they are likely to be involved in both actions.

Infant manual performance during reaching and grasping for objects moving in depth

Few studies have investigated manual performance in infants when reaching and grasping for objects moving in directions other than across the fronto-parallel plane. The present preliminary study explored object-oriented behavioral strategies and side preference in 8- and 10-month-old infants during reaching and grasping for objects approaching in depth from three positions (midline, and 27° dia...

fMRI of pantomimed and real grasping 1 What does the brain do when you fake it? An fMRI study of pantomimed and real grasping

Given that studying neural bases of actions is very challenging with fMRI, numerous experiments have used pantomimed actions as a proxy to studying neural circuits of real actions. However, the underlying assumption that the same neural mechanisms mediate real and pantomimed actions has never been directly tested. Moreover, the assumption is called into question by neuropsychological evidence s...

The contributions of vision and haptics to reaching and grasping

This review aims to provide a comprehensive outlook on the sensory (visual and haptic) contributions to reaching and grasping. The focus is on studies in developing children, normal, and neuropsychological populations, and in sensory-deprived individuals. Studies have suggested a right-hand/left-hemisphere specialization for visually guided grasping and a left-hand/right-hemisphere specializati...

Computational implications of modeling grasping as a form of (multiple-parallel) reaching.

Although it is true that the specific research on grasping has been dominated in recent years by the canonical transport + grip model originally formulated by Jeannerod (1984), still one can find in the research on reaching a number of links and anticipations to the new view on grasping made explicit by the authors of the target article. This paper reviews some of the relevant concepts and outl...
